79. (ANYTHING) & ROLL: Starting formation - Various. The term "...& Roll" may be added to any call which, by definition, causes one or more dancers to have turning body flow to the right or left as they complete their portion of the call . It is an instruction to those dancer(s) to turn individually, in place, one quarter (90 degrees) more in the direction of body flow determined by the preceding command. Note that if "...and Roll" is added to a call, which by definition, has some dancers walking in a straight line at the completion of their portion of the call, those dancers will do nothing for the "...and Roll".

Teaching Hints:

Explain to the dancers that ROLL means that they will do the preceding call then continue turning the way their body is turning one more quarter of a turn.

This call seems to be easier taught with just two couples working. Therefore, if you agree, explain to the dancers that you are going to have the Heads or Sides do a Star Thru and Roll. Tell the chosen couples to notice which way their body is turning as they do a Star Thru. When they finish the Star Thru, turn one more quarter. This will leave them facing the person with whom they did the Star Thru. Let all dancers experience this action.

Each caller will choose the next example call to demonstrate the Roll action. For here we will use Trade and Roll. This can be a Partner Trade or Mini-Waves. Put the dancers in one of the above formations. Explain to them that they are now going to complete the call with a 180 degree turn then do the Roll part by turning 90 degrees more the way their body is turning.

Note the definition again. There are some call where some dancers can do the Roll part and others can not. Scootback is an example. Here the ones doing the Turn Thru are walking in a straight line as they finish the call. The ones that does the Fold CAN do the Roll part.

Caution: When using Anything and Roll, the caller should be very aware of the action of the Anything part of the call. They should study the ending formation of the ...& Roll. Where part of the dancers can Roll and the others can’t can leave some unfamiliar formation for the less experienced caller.
