89. FLIP THE DIAMOND Starting formation - Any Diamond. the centers of the diamond do a Diamond Circulate to the next position in their diamond, while the points Run("Flip" 180 degrees) into the nearest center position and join hands to become the centers of the forming wave or line. When "flipping" a facing diamond, the points always take the inside path, and the centers always take the outside path.

After creating a Diamond formation, the callers should reemphasize:

  1. The positions of the Diamond - Centers, Points
  2. That a Diamond is a four dancer fourmation.
  3. That there are several types of Diamonds. Name them if desired.
  4. That even though there seems to be a Wave down the center, this is not true until the caller establishes the wave with a call that does.

When teaching Flip the Diamond, the callers should explain that:

  1. “Flip” in square dance language means “U Turn Back” with a pivoting action on the inside (nearest to the center of the formation) foot.
  2. The Flip is always done by the Point dancers. So it is important for them to know who is on Point.
  3. The Center Dancers, those with inside joined hands, will do a Diamond Circulate.
  4. The Point dancer will become the Inside dancer of the wave or Inside dancer of a Line when done from facing Diamonds.
  5. The Inside dancer will become the Outside or End dancer.

The caller should not proceed with letting ALL the dancers experience the Flip action and the Circulating action. The callers should take extra precaution to practice the dancers from a clockwise and counter clockwise circulating formation.

Callers should be aware that:

  1. All Clockwise Circulating Diamonds, Flip the Diamond will result in Right Hand Waves.
  2. All Counter Clockwise Circulating Diamonds, Flip the Diamond will result in Left Hand Waves.
  3. All Facing Diamonds, Flip the Diamond will result in Two Faced Lines.

It is the caller's decission how many formations will be shown on the first teaching session. But before leaving this call, all formation should be presented.
